If you are in crisis right now, please don't wait — and don't rely on an AI.
1. What Coach Y is — and is not
Coach Y is an artificial-intelligence program, not a human. It cannot feel human emotions, and it can make mistakes. It is an educational tutor and study-wellness companion for adult nursing students. It is not therapy, not counseling, not a mental-health or medical service, and it is not operated or overseen by a licensed clinician acting in a treatment role. Coach Y never diagnoses, never creates treatment plans, and never replaces your faculty, clinicians, or your own judgment. Synapse Nursing is intended for adults 18 and older; Coach Y is not suitable for children and may not be suitable for some minors.
2. Our crisis-response protocol (published in full)
We publish how this works so students, families, and educators can see exactly what we do — and where the limits are. No automated screen is perfect: pattern-based screening can miss crisis language, or flag something that was never a crisis. We do our best to catch it and put real help in front of you — but please reach out even when Coach Y does not, and if you are ever in immediate danger call 988 or 911.
- We screen Coach Y messages across every mode. A pattern-based crisis screen runs on each message a user sends — tutoring, exam practice, wellness chats, and the no-account demo on our homepage alike. It runs before any subscription, plan, or daily-limit gate, so safety resources are never behind a paywall. Screening is a safety net, not a guarantee — it can miss things.
- When the screen flags crisis language, the response is fixed, not left to the AI. Human-written responses take over. First a check-in ("I want to make sure you are okay"); if distress is confirmed — or the language is explicit — Coach Y states plainly that it is not a licensed professional and names real help: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line), alongside trusted people such as campus counseling, friends, family, or faculty.
- Journals are screened too. Private writing spaces (the Mood Journal and the Reflective Journal activity) run the same crisis screen on the student's own device when an entry is saved. When it detects crisis language it aims to show the same resources right away. The entry itself is not sent, shared, or flagged to anyone by this screening.
- We try to respect nursing coursework. Suicide-risk assessment is core NCLEX content. The screen is built to distinguish a student studying ("a client states 'I want to die' — what is the nurse's best response?") from a student disclosing, so real coursework can teach normally, and we work hard not to mistake a real disclosure for coursework. We test this in both directions — though, like any screen, it will not be right every time.
- We design so nothing suppresses a crisis resource. Our codebase forbids any rule that removes, hides, or delays crisis hotline information, and an automated test checks for the presence of 988 and 741741 in the crisis response before we ship. If that check fails, we treat it as a release blocker.
- Sexually explicit content is refused, and Coach Y will not knowingly produce content encouraging self-harm, suicide, or disordered coping under any framing.
3. Privacy during a crisis moment
Crisis screening is automated. It does not notify faculty, family, your school, or Synapse Learning LLC staff, and it does not create a record of what you wrote: Coach Y conversation content is not stored on our servers, Mood Journal entries stay on your device, and Reflective Journal entries are saved only to your own account (see our Privacy Policy). The door to help is opened to you — walking through it stays in your hands.
4. AI transparency
Coach Y tells you it is an AI: at signup, in our Terms of Use, in its own chat window at the start of a session, and periodically during long sessions. If anything ever makes it seem human — it isn't. It is a computer program that cannot feel human emotions.
5. Questions, concerns, or something we missed
If you believe Coach Y responded poorly to a safety moment, tell us — that report outranks every feature request we have: contact form. We review safety reports first.
